Beryl Chatterley, "Halfway There Day"
Beryl Chatterley is a supporting character in the series Kiff. She is Kiff Chatterley's mother and Martin Chatterley's wife, who works as a professor at Table Town University.
Profile
Beryl explaining the importance of roofs.
Beryl Chatterley is Martin Chatterley's wife and Kiff Chatterley's mother, and the three live in their home in suburban Table Town. Beryl is a tenured[5] professor at Table Town University, where she works under Dean Kim. Her subject of expertise has not been stated, but a drawing made by Kiff in "No Dad Ideas" shows Beryl giving a lecture about "The Origin of Bodergers Complex".
As a child, Beryl had a part-time job at a grocery store.[6] She attended high school at Table Town High School, where she was a star competitive volleyball player until a bizarre loss (caused by a bird landing on the volleyball net) to her obnoxious rival Dennis drove her to quit the sport permanently.[2] In college, she became close friends with the similarly-named Cheryl, Deryl, and Meryl, and the four "Eryls" (as Kiff calls them) still have occasional reunions.[7]
Appearance
Beryl teaching, as drawn by Kiff.
Beryl is a squirrel with yellow fur, a light yellow underbelly, circular, light yellow cheek dimples, and a bushy tail lined with a dark brown stripe. She has large round eyes with small pupils and two eyelashes on each eye, a dark brown oval-shaped nose, and a buck tooth. Height-wise, Beryl is the tallest of the three Chatterleys, being noticeably taller than both Kiff and Martin.
In her teenage years, as seen in flashbacks, Beryl had brown hair tied in a ponytail as well as white freckles, and wore a brace on her front tooth.[2]
Personality
Beryl leading Kiff and Martin away from trouble.
In addition to being generally cheerful and easygoing, Beryl is a loving wife and mother who greatly cares about her family. At the same time, she tends to be the most level-headed of the Chatterleys, and of Kiff's parents, Beryl is usually more stern and willing to let Kiff know when the latter oversteps her boundaries.
Beryl playing a crane game.
Beryl is an avid birdwatcher, and has her own blog dedicated to the hobby.[3] She also has a peculiar love for playing crane machines – a hobby first showcased in "Road Trip", and which is later revisited in "Weekly Grocery Shop", where she spends most of the episode collecting coupons at Slim Pickins to win the chance to play an antique crane game at the store.
Beryl demonstrates her volleyball skills.
Having been a star athlete in her teenage years, Beryl remains quite athletic. In "Beach Day", she is shown not to have lost her volleyball skills despite not having played the sport in many years, and only loses her rematch to Dennis due to another bizarre accident, much to her frustration. In "Roy-alty Check", she is revealed to be an adept gymnast, performing a trapeze routine at the Table Town Circus for her daughter in attendance.
Relationships
Kiff Chatterley
Beryl calming down Kiff.
Beryl has a warm relationship with Kiff, taking pride in her daughter's ambitious and energetic spirit, as well as Kiff's great sense of adventure. Martin has stated that Kiff inherited her perfectionism from Beryl.[8]
Nonetheless, Beryl looks out for Kiff's well-being and sometimes finds herself having to be the voice of reason when Kiff gets too caught up in a pursuit. In "Halfway There Day", Beryl calms down Kiff when Kiff becomes stressed out making the Chatterleys' Halfway There Day meal, and in "Nicknames", Beryl reassures Kiff by telling her that she does not need a special nickname from Nick Namé to be cool (and noting that "Kiff" itself is in fact already a nickname).
Beryl and Kiff teaming up to save Table Town.
Furthermore, Beryl has no qualms with exercising her authority for Kiff's own good. In "Thirst to Be the First", Beryl makes Kiff stay home and rest when it appears Kiff has fallen sick with drooptail, while in "You Can't Handle the Tooth!", Beryl has to repeatedly tell a stubborn Kiff to brush her teeth. In "Chatterley vs. Chatterley", Beryl secretly orchestrates a mock "family court" trial against an unsuspecting Martin on the charge of eating her leftover pizza slice, in an elaborate ruse to make Kiff, the actual culprit, fess up to the crime.
In "Big Coat", Beryl deals with Kiff wanting to buy a fashionable leather jacket instead of a more practical puffer coat for winter. Ultimately, Beryl buys the leather jacket, conceding that Kiff, as she is still a kid, should be allowed to explore how she wants to express herself.
From time to time, Beryl gets wrapped up in adventures of her own alongside Kiff. In "Dial B for Butt", Beryl and Kiff spend a day enjoying quality time together around Table Town, only to end up in an elaborate quest to save the city from a mysterious collective after Beryl receives an ominous butt dial.
Martin Chatterley
Beryl giving Martin a homemade ice dancing uniform.
Beryl is a caring and supportive spouse to Martin, and often looks out for him when his absentmindedness threatens to get the best of him. At times, she has to remind her husband when he is forgetful. For instance, in "Thirst to Be the First", before going to work, she leaves the reminder "Kiff is tricking you", spelled out on the refrigerator using alphabet magnets, to prevent Martin from being tricked into letting Kiff leave the house.
Beryl impressed by Martin's confidence.
Beryl used to accompany Martin on trivia nights when they were younger.[9] After Martin's love of ice dancing is exposed in "Ghost Wolf's Art", she gives Martin an ice dancing uniform she knitted for him years earlier, revealing that she had always been "carrying it around just in case." In "No Dad Ideas", Beryl chooses not to intervene when Martin gets carried away and spends large amounts of money manufacturing and promoting his double trucker invention, as she finds Martin's confidence "hot".
In "Roy-alty Check", Beryl and Martin disagree on whether Kiff should use her Found in Ambiguity royalties to repair the roof or the basement, and the two end up trying to outdo each other in spoiling Kiff to sway her to their respective sides.
Barry Buns
Beryl has a heart-to-heart talk with Barry.
Beryl is accustomed to Barry due to his close friendship with Kiff, and she enjoys his presence around the Chatterley residence.
In "Leave a Little Juice", Beryl ends up being the only Chatterley confident enough to ask Barry not to finish up the Chatterleys' orange juice when he is visiting, and Barry thanks Beryl for her directness in telling him. Barry later participates in Beryl's family court scheme in "Chatterley vs. Chatterley", acting as Beryl's lawyer at the trial.
Later in "Here Comes the Wedding Episode", the duo of Beryl and Barry are tasked with planning the Pone and Cherry Berry's wedding while Martin and Kiff personally assist the groom and bride.
Helen
Beryl running into Helen.
In "Weekly Grocery Shop", Beryl attempts to make small talk at Slim Pickins with Helen, whom she recognizes as a frequent participant in Kiff's adventures, but Helen fails to recall Beryl. When their continued encounters throughout the day grow increasingly awkward, Helen unsuccessfully tries to turn Beryl into a mushroom in frustration, only lightening up after eventually realizing that Beryl is Kiff's mother.
